Judith Donaghy

Judith Donaghy was born in Frodsham and now lives in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire.
Originally trained as a textile designer she later changed to fine art.

Painting mostly in oil on canvas, her pictures are a reflection or direct response to the places she has visited.

“There is a part of me that loves to play with paint, allowing my mind and hand to roam freely over the canvas creating from memory and small sketches things that I have seen and sometimes half forgotten”.

Her subject matter is usually landscape or coastal scenes inspired by the countryside, the coast, or visits abroad.

Occasionally she sets up her easel and works outdoors from direct observation, bringing the painting almost to the point of completion in one session. This can take several hours and has its disadvantages as weather conditions and light can alter dramatically.

For this reason, her normal practise is to make small sketches on site, which are later used as a starting point for paintings created in the studio. Using a combination of colour and design to create mood and atmosphere, the finished result is usually but not always, of a semi-abstract nature.

It is not unusual for her to have several pieces of work in various stages of completion due to layering of paint which can only be carried out when the work issufficiently dry.
